Blog Tour~The Hanging Girl

Hello everyone! Today is my stop on The Hanging Girl blog tour hosted by Raincoast Books. Also along with having my tour stop today, it is also the release of this book. So happy release day, and make sure to pick up your copy.
I will be reviewing this book, which I loved quite a bit. As well, us bloggers were given an opportunity to ask the author one question, so stay tuned to the end of the post to see what Eileen Cook's answer was to my question.
The Hanging Girl by Eileen Cook has a voice that immediantly intrigues readers, with compelling characters, and a thrilling storyline this book is sure to entertain. If you have not read anything by Eileen Cook, then I believe this book is a great start.

The thing I most enjoyed about The Hanging Girl was the unexpected events that took place. Leading up to these events, the readers are in for a shock that will turn their views of the story and keep them wanting more. Cook writes exceptional thrillers for all to enjoy and be a bit spooked. It did however start off sort of slow, but once the story picks up, it really does keep going until the end of the novel. Though it was slow, it was really easy to connect with Skye's narrative so readers won't feel really disconnected with the pace. Overall the story telling of this novel was astounding and showcased a great thriller.

The characters were another thing that were well-written and portrayed. Our main character Skye has grown up with a mom who believe in psychics, and all things that have to do with it. So when Skye needs cash fast to help her get to New York with her best friend, her choices take an unexpected turn. Throughout the course of the novel readers will be exposed to character growth that goes along with the story line. Skye's character is definitely one of the main characters that goes through that. The other characters are also easy to read as well. Each flowed with the story and was quite relevant when the time came. I didn't really find a character who I didn't enjoy, because they were all written quite well.

Overall, I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy thriller because The Hanging Girl will leave you shocked and wanting more. I also would recommend this book to anyone who has not read Eileen Cook's novels, this was my first, and I know I will be looking for more in the future.

The kidnapping was supposed to be easy—no one would get hurt and she’d get the money she needs to start a new life. But a seemingly harmless prank has turned dark, and Skye realizes the people she’s involved with are willing to kill to get what they want and she must discover their true identity before it’s too late.
Sabrina: Has your writing process changed since your first published book to this one?

Eileen: You should see my office when I’m writing. There are Post-It Notes stuck to the walls and a huge ten to fifteen-page outline with scribbled messages on it along with arrows and things underlined in different colors. There are index cards with scene ideas that I stick on a cork board and then move around as I try and figure out how to best tell the story. Not to mention I’m often pacing back and forth mumbling to myself trying to figure out the plot.

This is completely different from how I used to write. I never used to do much plotting and planning. My first several books I wrote by going with the flow. I would get an idea, sit down and see what happened. I evolved into becoming a plotter over the course of several books. Now I spend a couple of months figuring out the story before I start writing.

However, what I have realized is that no matter how much I plot and plan, the story will still take a life of its own once I start writing. The characters develop as the story is written and they tend to kidnap my carefully plotted plan and take it in a new direction.  What I am 100% certain of is that there is no right way to write a novel—just what works for you. No matter how you do, you must find a way to get those words on the page.

Eileen Cook is a multi-published author with her novels appearing in eight languages. Her books have been optioned for film and TV. She spent most of her teen years wishing she were someone else or somewhere else, which is great training for a writer. Her newest book, THE HANGING GIRL, will be out in October 2017. She’s an instructor/mentor with the Simon Fraser University Writer’s Studio Program.
Eileen lives in Vancouver with her husband and two very naughty dogs and no longer wishes to be anyone or anywhere else.
